Comcast, NBC Deal Getting Closer     Comcast is close to a deal with General Electric to take over control of its NBC Universal unit after meetings concluded with a tentative agreement on the large points, according to The New York Times, citing people close to the talks.     Under the leaked deal, Comcast will contribute “several billion” in cash and “its own stable of cable networks,” in order to receive a 51% stake in NBC Universal.     GE, which currently owns 80% of NBC Universal, would decrease its shares to 49% and put forward around $12 billion in debt into the company.     News Corp popped up as a potential rival bidder, though it appears the Comcast plans are far enough along that the deal will happen.     It’ll be interesting to see what Comcast does with NBCU and if its control will extend to the Hulu joint venture from NBCU, News Corp and Disney.     Cablecos are planning to roll out big projects to put their content on the Web after it premiers on the TV set, so this move could be one major push for Hulu to go to a pay-for model. Comcast would likely try to find a way to, at very least, use Hulu to compliment its TV Everywhere platform.     Currently, Comcast can only authenticate viewers in their own homes for the TV Everywhere platform, so a premium subscription model added on to Hulu could be used as a traveling verification for users who want to access content when on the road. TV Everywhere will also likely be originally limited to locations that get Comcast’s Internet service, another reason a Hulu premium subscription built into a Comcast monthly bill would be a smart step.     Comcast aims to be the first cable TV operator to unlock a large amount of cable TV shows and movies, basically replicating its on-demand model online, and picking up NBC Universal for both content and stock in Hulu would definitely help them expand this beyond TV Everywhere’s perceived limitations.     With News Corp in the Hulu mix, Comcast has a lot of support if it makes the pay-for Hulu proposal. 0 / CMNT
